Choral Elitism—It’s Real

Read this terrific article by Chris Maunu, which originally appeared in the Colorado ACDA newsletter.

Every professional musician I know, myself most of all (!), harbors personal insecurities, and the mechanisms we use to conceal those are often ugly—even hideous. Elitism is one of those grotesque coping mechanisms, and Chris asks exactly the right questions: What is the problem? And what do we do about it?

I’ll be attending two ACDA regional conferences this spring—both the Southern Division and the Eastern Division—and I’m going to make a concerted effort to be mindful of how I both think and speak about the performances I hear there. I want to celebrate with my friends and colleagues their every success.

Will you join me and do the same?
